From the United Nations
The United Nations defines poverty as a state in which an individual or group is living on less than $1.25 a day. To meet the goal of eradicating poverty and hunger, the UN would like to have the population that lives at an extreme poverty rate halved by 2015. There has definitely been some progress towards achieving this goal. In 2010, the number of people living in extreme poverty was less than half of that in 1990. However, there are still an estimating 1 billion people that are still living at or below poverty and extreme poverty.
In addition to general poverty, the UN wants to reduce the number of people around the world who are hungry. According to the UN's website, almost 15% of the world's population is undernourished, and approximately 1 out of every 5 children is underweight. This is because children in rural areas are twice as likely to be underweight than children who live in urban areas.
The United Nations also wants to ensure that employment opportunities are available to all people regardless of age and/or gender. This includes better working conditions, and fair pay for labor. This was heavily influenced by poor working conditions in eastern Asia.

In Russia
Russia came up with two goals they would like to address that deal with solving the issue of hunger. Specifically, they would like to:
1. Halve by 2015 the general poverty level and eradicate extreme poverty among non-marginal groups of the population.
2. Provide access to food for the poor.
